El último trabajo que tuve fue maestra de inglés. Estuve trabajando en la universidad de Puerto Rico, en Puerto Rico. Me gustaba mucho mi trabajo porque era muy independiente para dar las clases. Yo podía diseñar mi currículo. Tenía estudiantes de muchos lugares, no solamente de Puerto Rico. Era una clase que tenía alumnos de diferentes lugares del mundo que estaban interesados en aprender el inglés como segunda lengua. Teníamos reuniones, o juntas, de maestros cada mes. También había reuniones de facultad. También hacíamos entrevistas a los estudiantes. No sé, la vida de maestros en la universidad es muy ocupada. Siempre estás corrigiendo exámenes, preparando exámenes, preparando clases, hablando con alumnos. Pero es muy divertido porque conoces a muchas personas.
The last job that I had was as an English Teacher. I was working at the University of Puerto Rico, in Puerto Rico. I liked my job a lot because teaching the classes allowed for a lot of independence. I could design my own curriculum. I had students from many places, not just Puerto Rico. It was a class that had students from different places in the world who were interested in learning English as a second language. We would have teacher gatherings, or meetings, every month. There were also faculty get-togethers. We would also give our students interviews. . . I don't know . . . the life of a university teacher is very busy. You're always correcting exams, preparing exams, preparing classes, talking to students. But it's a lot of fun because you get to know a lot of people.
Muy bien, mi primer viaje de avión lo organicé a la edad de once años y fue un viaje muy largo que tuvo una escala técnica en la capital de España, en Madrid. El origen del viaje fue en Bilbao en el año 1981. Fue un avión muy pequeñito pero en Madrid en seguida tomamos un gran jumbo para cruzar el Atlántico con dirección a Caracas. Como era un jumbo era un avión muy grande. Tenía muchísimas cosas y para mí era una gran, era una doble novedad: la primera que por primera vez viajaba en avión, y la segunda que, insisto como era un avión muy grande tenía muchísimas cosas para hacer. Aunque el viaje era muy largo me daba tiempo a. . . poder investigar. . . coger muestras de todo lo que encontraba, etc. En aquella época los viajes en avión eran muy caros y las aerolíneas no se veían en la obligación de escatimar en regalos etc., para los tripulantes con lo cual encontrabas una muestra variadísima de productos típicos de avión como toallitas, jabones, perfumes, bandejitas, cubiertos etc., que yo, por mi edad, pues me hacía mucha ilusión coleccionar, y recoger. Entonces, pues ciertamente me bajé del avión con muchas más cosas de las que había iniciado el viaje. Fue muy agradable a pesar de lo largo que fue llegar hasta Caracas desde Madrid.
Very well, I organized my first plane trip at eleven years of age and it was a very long trip that had a technical lay over in the capital of Spain, in Madrid. The origin of the trip was in Bilbao in 1981. It was a very small airplane but in Madrid we immediately took a big jumbo jet to cross the Atlantic heading for Caracas. Since it was a jumbo it was a very big jet. It had many things and for me it was a great, a double, novelty: first of all, for the first time I was travelling on a plane, and secondly that, again, it was very big and it had many things to do. Although the flight was long it gave me time to... be able to investigate. . .to take samples of everything that I found, etc. Back then flights were very expensive and the airlines didn't feel the need to skimp on gifts etc., for the passengers with which you would find an incredible variety of samples of typical airplane products like little towels, bars of soap, perfumes, small trays, silverware etc which I, because of my age, well it was a dream for me to collect. So, well, certainly I got off the plane with many more things than I'd started the trip with. It was very enjoyable despite the length to Caracas from Madrid.
Una vez en el bus de la avenida Bancay, en Lima en los años 89, había mucha congestión de pasajeros y el bus iba muy, muy, muy lleno, lleno, y yo sobre la puerta y el chofer cerró con la puerta y uno de mis dedos mayores agarró a la puerta y me sacó una uña. Y en ese instante nadie me auxiliaba, ¿no? solamente que dices, sacar mi pañuelo y envolver mi dedo mayor hasta al... llegar hasta al final, ¿no? Regresé en Miraflores y en Miraflores recién me fui a una clínica a poder, este, sacar la uña y hacerme la cirugía, ¿no?
Once I was on a bus on Bancay Avenue in Lima in 1989, there was a lot of traffic and the passengers were really, really packed on the bus and I was next to the door when the driver closed it and one of my fingers was caught in the door and it ripped off a nail. And at that moment nobody would help me. They'd just tell me to take out may handkerchief and wrap it up until we get to the end of the line. I got off at Miraflores and in Miraflores I went to the clinic right away for them to take the nail off and operate on me, right?
