Spanish 101 Express "going to"

Overview

Voy a means I'm going to. It implies what you are doing in the present:

Voy a México.
      I'm going to Mexico.
Yo voy a la escuela.
      I'm going to school.
Voy al hospital.
      I'm going to the hospital.

Even though it is written in the present, sometimes it implies something you will do in the future or that you are about to do.

Yo voy a leer el libro.
      I am going to read the book.
Yo voy a ayudar a María.
      I'm going to help Mary.
Yo voy a ir a la farmacia con ella.
      I am going to go to the drugstore with her.

Note: ir + a = going to
