I thought the school was great. All the teachers and students were friendly. Also, Flory is on the ball. My host family was great. I studied at the school for 7 weeks and was sad to leave. The only thing I would have done differently is studied a bit more basic grammar before I arrived so I could have hit the ground running. However, regarding the school, I would like to return in the near future.

I have only positive things to say about my time studying at La Democracia, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in studying Spanish in Guatemala. It is on the smaller side, which means that they are really attentive to each student's needs. They provide quality Spanish instruction, great host families, and interesting opportunities to learn about Guatemala and visit places in the area. I had a wonderful Spanish teacher, Libia, who taught me everything I needed to be a bilingual social worker. She was knowledgeable, creative, able to explain things clearly, and always had a positive attitude with a great sense of humor. In addition, my host family, which was arranged through La Democracia, was incredibly warm, generous, and accommodating. I felt that the staff at La Democracia really cared about my well-being and provided me with everything I needed along the way. I also very much enjoyed the sightseeing trips arranged for students. If I return to Xela to brush up on my Spanish (which I hope to do), I will definitely choose La Democracia again.
Evaluation from MartyWrin:
I spent three weeks at La Democracia in July of 2013. Every aspect of my trip and my experience was handled very well by the director, Flory. I had a great host family. The accommodations and food were good. The location of the school is away from other schools so it was a great place for an authentic immersion environment. My instructor was great, and every other student that I talked to was very happy with his/her instructor as well. It is a small school so everyone forms community well and each student gets exactly what he/she needs. It is definitely worth taking excursions and any weekend trips as well. They are all well-organized and very rewarding. I highly recommend La Democracia to anyone interested in focusing on learning Spanish. I liked it so much that I booked my next trip before I had even finished my first visit!

La Democracia has been the best experience I have had learning a language. The instructors were top class, and the facilities were great. I was able to use the internet for free onsite, as this is offered, and I was able to participate in lots of outside activities.
